There’s a theory developing among the child-behavior experts called the Orchid vs. Dandelion Theory. Basically what this theory is suggesting is that most children can grow up in almost any environment without too much effort required to get them to the level of basic functioning individuals in our society. (Dandelions).
The other group of children are emotionally sensitive people, roughly 20% of the population. These kids require a more careful environment in order to flourish. (Orchids). Many kids with ADHD spectrum of disorders are sensitive kids. Emotionally they empathize with everyone. They love spending time with animals over humans.
There is a genetic link as well. There is a gene that is responsible for serotonin transporter chains in the brain. There is a short version of this gene and a long version. If a child has the short version of this gene, they are more predisposed to anxiety, depression, and other disorders. These are the introverted kids that are possible geniuses.
These children need a nurturing environment to thrive and survive. If that environment is provided to these kids, they will bloom. If not, they tend to become shrinking violets that never reach their true potential. So lets encourage and love all children and appreciate their special talents. Today, children need less presents and more presence from their parents.
