According to a Wall Street Journal article late last year, people who are left handed are at greater risk for a lot of health hazards. Although many lefties are very creative because they are right brain dominant, they also tend to be more accident prone. The increased incidence of accidents may help explain why they also tend to die younger. On average, left handed people die younger than their right handed counter-parts. Lefties are also more prone to neurologic disorders like Schizophrenia and the spectrum of ADHD disorders.
People who are mixed handedness or have mixed(throw left, kick right) are also at increased risk for health problems. It’s very critical for the brain to be lateralized. In other words, the brain functions most efficiently when one side of the brain is dominant versus a brain that has certain functions dominant on the left and other functions dominant on the right. This lack of lateralization is believed to be part of the issue with ADHD spectrum disorders. These kids have brains that have one hemisphere that is delayed in it’s development and therefore doesn’t correctly “sync up” with the other hemisphere of the brain. When this developmental delay occurs in the brain, it manifests as the “symptoms” we see in kids along the ADHD spectrum of disorders.
These behaviors include compulsivity, lack of attention and focus, poor balance and coordination, poor motor skills- both fine and gross. Social introvertedness, poor social skills, and poor communication skills.
Check with a Chiropractor who is trained in functional neurology to see if your child could benefit from a program that is designed to change your child’s neurology and metabolic state through nutritional adjustments and spinal adjustments.
